Hey Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Queens!
Sunscreen is ESSENTIAL year-round for people of color, despite common misconceptions that darker skin tones do not require sun protection.
While melanin provides some natural defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, it is not sufficient to prevent damage entirely. UV exposure can lead to hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer, which often goes undiagnosed in people of color until it’s advanced and harder to treat.
Wearing sunscreen daily helps protect the skin from these risks by shielding it from both UVA and UVB rays.
- UVA rays penetrate the skin deeply and are responsible for aging
- UVB rays cause sunburn.
Both types of rays contribute to skin cancer. Sunscreen also plays a crucial role in preventing and managing conditions like melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which are more prevalent in darker skin tones.
Recommendations
- Choose a broad-spectrum MINERAL BASED sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
- I like SuperGoop Mineral Matte Screen. I would love to try Black Girl Sunscreen once I finish my bottle of Colorescience Face Shield Flex .
- Reapply it every two hours when outdoors
Many modern sunscreens are formulated to avoid leaving a white cast, making them more suitable for deeper skin tones. However, mineral based is best. Please check out this blog post from OneSkin.co discussing the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen.
Incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, regardless of the season or weather, ensures consistent protection against UV damage.
By prioritizing sunscreen use year-round, people of color can better safeguard their skin’s health, maintain an even complexion, and reduce the risk of long-term damage.
